I got a question which Im positive you guys get all the time but Im honestly lost and I need a starting point. Im just about to graduate school (audio engineering obviously) and I want to work in a studio its my dream job and always has been. But with the current economic state it seems like a lot of studios dont even want interns( just my luck all I want to do is learn and be a great engineer someday). Ryan and Bassy what should I do I just want some advice from someone who has been in my shoes… Continue

EOM 3!!!

Hey all!
Bob, Chris from Legacy and I are thinking of doing a new event here in NYC on June 20th, 2009. Anyone who would like to attend should email Bob and I at elementsofmixing@gmail.com so we can estimate how many might attend and adjust the schedule and specific studio accordingly. Hope to hear from you soon!!!
Thanks,
RW

Attention Mixers who attended EOM one and/or two!

We are preparing the outline for the Elements of Mixing Seminar three, and we would like to include a few comments form the students about what they took away from the last seminar...maybe your mixes sounded immediately better, maybe not? Or you were able to hear something in your own mixes that you didn't hear before. We welcome your comments and will publish probably 4 or 5. Thanks

Selective Perception (Mixing concept)

Much of what I do as a mixer over the course of developing a finished mix for a song is what i call Selective Focus. It's basically a glorified term for paying attention to one thing, or maby two things at a time while listening to playback. When I begin a mix, I always start with all the faders at unity and I start to sort of clumsily put together a perspective for the song, moving elements like bass, drums, guitars, and keys into a rough perspective. From that point on, I begin "shaving" off e… Continue

Wondering if you guys (Ryan or Bassy) have any headphones that you would recommend for use in the mixing process. I mix on KRK monitors, but wanted a good set of headphones for touching up my mixes and referencing.

I have a question, when using a delay in front of a reverb, do you disable the pre-delay on the reverb?

Such as mine would have to be two things, One going to a studio to produce a track and you have the manger slash whatever they want to call themselves on your back tryna tell you the PRODUCER how to do your job they hired you for and to tell you wha…

Great answers by Karl and Rosenthol! A good arrangement based on well established principles for each genre can help you find the ballpark, but it's up to you to push the envelope and create unique song.

Most people are still working at 44.1/48khz due to system performance issues and data sizes. If I had my choice, however, I'd be rocking 24/96khz provided I could use my Apogee converters!

This is specific to the mix, Charles. Can you either be more specific with your question or post an audio example so we can comment on a specific recording? Thanks!

I truly don't understand the question. Can you elaborate?
